![]() Why does Canada have a Parliamentary Poet Laureate?
Canadian legislators wanted to encourage and promote the importance of literature, culture and language within Canadian society by drawing the public’s attention to poetry, both spoken and written, and to the nature of and need for poetry. The term of the Parliamentary Poet Laureate is two years. Poetry is a ruddy pheasant disappearing into the bush.

Words Aloud invites you to experience the spoken word!
The Words Aloud Documentary features performances by some of Canada’s best poets and spoken word artists including Lorna Crozier and Shane Koyczan (who recently performed at the opening ceremony of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics). Says Liz Zetlin, director/producer of the documentary, “This film takes you on a journey through the many forms of spoken word, including dub, slam and lyric poetry, performance poetry, and storytelling. You’ll learn what makes a poet, what drives them to create, what’s most difficult about the writing life, and what compels them to continue. You’ll see how the small town of Durham creates a vibrant poetic community and why your own voice is so important.” The Doc will soon be available on DVD from McNabb Connolly, for educational distribution, and from the Words Aloud website, for home use. It can be borrowed from the Owen Sound Library or purchased at the Downtown Bookstore. All proceeds go to the South Grey Bruce Youth Literacy Council. “My goal is to have the videos and Study Guide used in high schools across Canada,” says Zetlin. “We’re launching them first in Grey/Bruce, then across the country. They’re already in use in Victoria, Sudbury, York Region and beyond.” |
